Just a super quick blog post about a short evening course I recently attended at The Bowery in Headingley. It was a 6 week print making course taught by the talented lady Miriam Trent behind Mint Print. Miriam helped us explore several different types of printing – collagraph, mono print and lino printing whilst forcing us to eat ferrero rocher. The results of people’s work were really fantastic considering we were all beginners, I took just a few little snaps to show you. There is a good range of classes at the Bowery and it gave me a good excuse for a gossipy tea in the cafe with my pal before each class (where I discovered jacket ‘sweet’ potatoes…I’ve never treated sweet potatoes like a normal jacket potato…I can recommend it!). Miriam is running some more courses and classes really soon so if you fancy giving print making a go it’s a great friendly class to try although I can’t guarantee the ferrero rochers….she must have been just spoiling us (sorry…).

I’ve now finished and delivered the charm bracelet commission I was making and I was so pleased with the results. I’ve heard happy things form the commissioner (who has been away in the Congo of all places!). She really likes it and it’s a pressie for her God Daughter so I hope she likes it too when she’s a little bit older. I’ve decided to add Charm Bracelets into my online shop with a choice of little charms – eventually I’ll make one of each charm and photograph them so it’s clear what’s on offer. The charms are created from sheet silver as opposed to being cast so they have a more ‘flat’ feel than some traditional silver (monopoly piece style) charms but I’ve developed a mixture of choices with different textures and finishes which I think work well together.

Recently I spent time working on a commission for some clip on earrings for a special lady in her 90s. She is my Sister-in-laws Nana and she is so adorable. She bought the pretty triple flower necklace that is featured on my website almost as soon as I launched the site and was keen to have some matching earrings.

Unfortunately I had terrible trouble with the clip-on findings. She had some that she wanted to send me to use but the first pair got mangled in the post…must have gone through the letter roller, the second pair I managed to melt whilst attaching them (oops!) so the actual sprung clip bit became really loose and wouldn’t have stayed on an ear and the third pair having actually managed to solder them onto the earrings (using a lot of thermo-gel on the hinge / clip bit) then seemed to react with the acid in my pickling bath and deposited a worrying layer of dull grey fuzzy-ness (this is the only description I can think of) onto the whole earring. I thought for a while that I’d ruined them….I may have had a small paddy through sheer frustration…but I dared to put them in the barrel polisher and they came out really well finished. Phew, big sigh of relief. I’m not sure why they reacted in the pickle that way but I have a suspicion that they weren’t fine or sterling silver and may have been something plated or just a poorer silver – they didn’t have a silver stamp which my findings normally do have (ps – ‘findings’ is the word for little things like ear hooks, studs, chains, butterfly earring backs etc, just in case you were wondering).

Anyway, the finished product is below. The earrings have a satin finish as the original necklace had too but are larger in size than the necklace. Hope she likes them. The necklace was bought as a present from her husband to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. How amazing is that? Only 64.5 years to go for us then…!

The lovely ladies at Made-It sent us all the information for a very exciting new event at RHS Harlow Carr the other day….a Pop Up Gallery. I’ve been invited to exhibit and sell my handmade silver jewellery for a whole month. A month! I took part in a craft fair there last year and although it was a glorious weekend, sales were sadly few (for me at least) so I’m hoping that a month’s stint will be fruitful. Of course I don’t need to be there the whole time. Good job as I’m leaving the country for part of the time on our belated honeymoon (woop!) but Kirsten and Deborah will be manning the stalls with help from various stall holders throughout the month. It feels very exciting to be part of a more exhibitiony type event rather than the usual craft fair. Pop Up Gallery sounds super sophisticated don’t you think? It’s running from 5th May until 5th June in The Bath House at the bottom of the site and the Gardens are just beautiful at that time of year. There is also a Betty’s Tea Room on site…..need I mention more? To find out more about RHS Harlow Carr you can follow this link it is a charging site (unless you’re an RHS member) so worth making a day of it.

Well, better get making. I feel some floral designs coming on…

Oops, haven’t found the time to update the blog for a while but thought I’d better just upload my first official ‘Ta dah!’. I’ve spent some time fiddling about with the fuschia silver earring design and feel really happy with the results. I made the flowers a little bigger and found a better wire for creating the little flower stems. At the moment there is only one pair in existence but they’ve been much admired in my ears so I plan to get a few pairs on the website for sale in the next month – I’ll be tweeting when they’re ready so do follow me @silverinktree if you want to be the first to find out. I’m also planning a few more birdies to join my humming bird and blackbird so will keep you posted. Maybe a chubby little wren and I’m thinking of peacocks too….

Happy mothers day to all those lovely mums out there. I know quite a number of new mums and it’s no mean feat becoming a mum for the first time so well done to you all, hope you are being spoilt rotten by the family. Unfortunately my mum is poorly today with a horrid cold so I’m going to take her a yummy Chinese take-away as a treat for tea tonight. Anyway, I wanted to share some of my mums amazing talent with you. She is very crafty too but her specialities are knitting and anything fabric related. She has been doing a re-upholstery night class for the last few years and recently re-upholstered an old chair for us that belonged to my Grandpa and Grandma many years ago (her parents). I think the frame is a sort of 1950s style and we wanted something that would match our colourful curtains. The finished chair is just amazing, we love it and it’ll be a welcome addition when I have the girls over for craft club…one of us always ends up sitting on the floor!

This week I’ve been making some regular pieces for my stock but also started experimenting with a silver bangle…the finished product will be something to match my Dew stem earrings. I just need to work out the best silver wire to use so that the bangle doesn’t bend out of shape too easily.

Fuschia earrings

I also had a fun time fiddling about and making a prototype of something that has been in my head for months…I was really pleased with how it’s turned out so far. The design is loosely based on a Fuschia flower. As a kid (much to my Dad’s dismay!) I used to love popping the flower pods on the bush that was at the end of our drive! I love the colours of Fuschias too – vibrant pink and purple, none of that namby pamby pastel nonsense. I’m thinking about developing it into a pendant on a long chain as well as dangly earrings. Watch this space…..

Today during my lunch break (in my real-life-day-job-that-pays-the-mortgage!) I had a little snoop around the shops. I work in Hebden Bridge. A very dangerous place to work, especially when on Honeymoon Economy Drive. The shops are divine. Hebden is FULL of amazing little independent shops and has a fantastic arts scene, in fact it’s won various awards for being, well, just so darned lovely. Anyway, temptation to spend was all around me but I stuck to the charity shops and also discovered a really tiny little gallery that I’d never seen before (even after working there for two years I’m still discovering exciting things). Low and behold, inside the gallery minding his own business (literally) was a jeweller called Stephen Roper and his well tooled workshop was based there with him. What a lucky man! A craft gallery and workshop combo…my dream! although I’m under no illusions about how hard it must be to make a living from making and selling jewellery. His stuff was lovely. Totally different from my style and I just had to quiz him about the techniques he used as the pieces had such an unusual finish. I’m sure I must have sounded very silly, as having investigated the techniques he quoted (‘fusing’ and ‘reticulation’) I find they are in fact used a lot in the business, I’ve just never come across them before. Actually, I think I’ve probably reticulated without knowing…I may have sworn at the time as I over annealed and melted the surface of something…little did I know that it was an actual technique…and when mastered it can have beautiful results.

My research then led me to a course on Fusing and Reticulation down in London. It was £510. Sob. I need to sell a lot of pieces before I can go on this….will have to experiment myself. I will keep you posted….!

PS – I did find a total bargain in a charity shop too. Biscuit coloured cashmere cardigan (£4). Currently a bit Granny looking for me (pearl buttons etc) but soon to be up-cycled with a load of random buttons from my button jar. In fact…that’s what I’m going to do right now….see ya!

This week I’ve started working on an interesting new commission….well, thinking about it anyway. I had an enquiry last weekend about making a charm bracelet and having read the email I went into a mild panic…”I’ve never made one before, where do I start”…etc…..but the more I’ve thought about it the more exciting it’s become. I’ve been daydreaming about lots of different types of charms and how I can personalise the bracelet. It’s really nice to have a new challenge and to be able to experiment as I’m often making the same sort of thing. So, watch this space. If it’s a success I might be developing a new item to sell in the online shop.

I have my eye on some glorious kitchen kitsch in the form of this corkscrew and this sewing box footstool hybrid – surely this piece of furniture has something for everyone in our household? Storage for my ‘craft crap’ (how dare he!) and restage for his feet (often smelly). Anyway, I’m sworn off spending as we’ve just booked a BIG holiday (honeymoon actually!) so ecomony drive central at the mo. Maybe pay day.

The crafting and silversmithing has been on hold for a week or so as the calendar seems to have hotted up and I’ve been a busy social butterfly all week. Last night was a highlight with a rare trip into the city lights with the Hubs to see King Creosote and Jon Hopkins perform at Leeds City Varieties. What at awesome sound. Truly mesmerising. Loving all that folky dokey goodness.

Anyway, my recent orders have now all been sent across the country…one made a second trip over to France and I’m so pleased with my new boxes and ribbon that I bought to package things up. My sister-in-law’s wise words ”it’s all about the packaging” are so true. Nothing nicer than getting something through the post which is all wrapped and special and present-like – especially if you’ve bought it for yourself as a little treat. Naughty but nice.

How exciting. My first online sale a mere few minutes after sending my eNewsletter last night! The Husband got very grumpy (although he was also super pleased) as I was then too giddy to watch the film we’d started watching for our Sunday night entertainment. I was also thinking that I wished I’d finished that star necklace I’d been working on in the afternoon then I could have simply popped it in an envelope and sent it off to a lucky lady whose Valentines present I happen to know it will be. Ssshhhh….don’t tell her! Still, it won’t take me long to finish and it’s so nice to know it’s a special present, a tiny bit of extra crafty love will go into finishing it.

A huge thank you to everyone who sent such kind and supportive messages, tweets, facebooky things etc and for forwarding my newsletter onto other friends. I’ve already had quite a few enquiries as the word has spead so that is really brilliant. I think I might have to schedule a ‘jewellery only’ evening or two every week…(maybe I can give up jogging as I simply won’t have time to go…Oh what a tradgedy that would be!). Not quite time to give up the day job yet though….!

Speaking of Valentines day…I’ll be adding some new little heart earrings to the shop super soon, a very wearable, simple and affordable design so keep your eyes peeled for those in case you need to drop some hints….or treat yourself. Go on, you know you deserve it.

PS – Since penning my post above I’ve made another sale. Double exciting! A little humming bird will be fluttering it’s wings down to London later this week.

Well, today is The Day that I’m going to start doing a little bit of promotion for my new website. I have generated a (surprisingly long) email mailing list and have whizzed people a little line to tell them about my site. Some addresses collected from people who have made enquiries at various craft fairs…but mostly it’s just family, extended family, friends, extended friends, colleagues, extended colleagues!

Hopefully this is a good place to start and maybe the word will spread but I have to let you into a secret. ..I’m a little bit nervous about putting myself ‘out there’. Making jewellery has been in my life for quite a long time now…gosh, maybe nearly a decade? But I’ve never really tried to make it anything more than an enjoyable hobby with the odd few sales at craft fairs or jewellery parties or through commissions. I’ve never had the time or the confidence to push it further really but after much encouragement and some very kind words and actions of support I thought it was high time to dip my toe into the world of online selling and see how I got on. There are so many amazing opportunities to sell (and buy) handmade work online that I thought maybe, just maybe someone somewhere might like to buy mine. We shall see!

Now, strictly this might be a silver jewellery blog but I have to confess to you that I have developed a bit of a guilty pleasure since doing a short night class last January. Crochet. I love it. I can’t get enough of it and the entire house is now full of wool. There is a ball in nearly every room (perhaps apart from the bathroom….I think). It drives the Other Half a little bit mad and he bought me a really lovely little wooden storage bench for Christmas in the hope that I might actually put some wool away occaisionally. Anyway, I just had to sneak in a little post about it and some photos of a few recent creations. My crocheted snowflakes and holly leaf brooch are from patterns on the brilliant blog Attic24. I only learnt how to do the holly leaves on December 22nd so if you didn’t get one this year I plan to start my Christmas presents very early in 2012! You can expect some other random crafts to appear from time to time…..I wouldn’t want anyone to get bored of silver….

After that, there is a lot of filing and polishing with various grades of polishing paper (a bit like sandpaper), next the piece might need shaping or for bits to be soldered together (such as earring backs). In order to shape the metal it needs to be made softer by heating it, this is called ‘annealing’ and is done with a blow torch as many times as you need so achieve the shape you want. After annealing, and sometimes throughout the making process, pieces are put into a very mild acid solution which cleans them ready for finishing. Finishing off a piece might involve more papering and then a final polish – for some pieces this is on the ‘scary polishing wheel’ which resides in the ‘dirty’ side of the basement. The ‘scary polishing wheel’ is scary indeed but it puts an amazing high shine finish on the larger pieces – although it usually takes off my fingertips in the process and the metal gets super hot whilst using it! The Other Half laughs a lot when I emerge from this activity as I often have hands and a face which look like I’ve been down the pits (with a clean goggle shape where I’ve had my eye protection!). For polishing smaller pieces I will use a barrel polisher which also gives a good finish.

So, there you have it, Jewellery making in a paragraph!

Welcome to the Silver Ink Tree blog and my first blog post. It’s been a very hectic few months as it always is at this time of year juggling silver jewellery making with my day job, Christmas shopping, festive socialising, house work (groan) and weekend craft fairs plus the odd special commission. Anyway, by the time you’re reading this my whizzy new website will be up and running and hopefully I’ll be relaxing with a sherry, port, mulled cider (new favourite) or some other yuletide tipple with not a pair of pliers or a blow torch in sight!

…and maybe you’ll be wearing a new piece of silver jewellery?

I’ve sold at quite a few fairs this Autumn and especially had fun with the usual crafty crew at the Made-It fairs run by the lovely Kirsten and Deborah made it and also at a very fun ‘Mums Mulled Wine Mooch’ in support of a local pre-school. The combination of wine, cake, no husbands and no children was definitely good for my sales. I don’t think I’ve ever sold a piece of jewellery at 11.15pm before!

I’ve had a few nice silver jewellery commissions and presents to make too, ranging from a really simple star necklace for my niece to a more complicated pair of bike cufflinks and there have been a few new festive Silver Ink Tree designs to add to the collection including tiny snowflake earrings and a stags head pendant so look out for these on the website.

I really hope you enjoy looking at the website, it’s been a long time coming and I must thank my patient Other Half for making it look so fab. The website is dedicated to my lovely Dad.
